Atera alternative for services-heavy MSPs

Atera's per-tech RMM+PSA model is great for all-tech MSPs running heavy on monitoring volume. OriginPSA is the PSA-first alternative for MSPs running heavy on services revenue — proper project management, billing depth, inventory, and per-user pricing for mixed-staff teams.

Why MSPs evaluate OriginPSA against Atera

We hear the same handful of reasons whenever Atera comes up in a buying conversation. The four that come up most often:

1

PSA-first, not RMM-first

Atera grew up as an RMM with PSA features attached. It works for shops where the RMM is the primary tool and the PSA is light office work. OriginPSA grew up as a PSA — the ticketing, projects, billing, and reporting are first-class, with RMM via integration (currently NinjaOne, more on the roadmap). If your MSP runs heavy on services revenue rather than monitoring volume, the PSA-first orientation matters.

2

Per-user pricing for mixed staff

Atera charges per technician, which is great if your team is all techs. It's awkward when you have non-tech staff (sales, billing, ops, dispatch, project managers) who need PSA access but aren't doing RMM work. OriginPSA charges per user — a billing-only user costs the same as a senior engineer. Mixed-staff MSPs often pay less overall on per-user pricing.

3

Real project management

Atera's project tracking is oriented toward task-level work management; phase-budgeting, profitability tracking, and dependency management are more limited than dedicated services-PSA platforms. OriginPSA's project module is built for services-revenue tracking with live margin visibility on every active project — phases, milestones with auto-fire criteria, signed change orders that stack into the authorized budget, and a customer-portal read-only project view.

4

Inventory, procurement, and shipping

Atera does not advertise a multi-warehouse inventory, procurement, or shipping-integration module on its marketplace — fine if you don't resell hardware, limiting if you do. OriginPSA includes full inventory (multi-warehouse, purchase orders, vendor management, reorder automation, serial tracking, kit assemblies, shipping integrations with ShipStation/UPS/FedEx/USPS). MSPs and AV integrators that move physical product use it as a real WMS.

Where Atera is genuinely strong

We don't recommend switching unless one of the reasons above outweighs everything Atera does well. Honest list:

  • Native RMM with no separate vendor — single product, single bill
  • Pay-per-tech pricing genuinely cheaper for all-tech MSPs
  • AI features ship aggressively (Atera has been early on LLM-powered ticket summaries, automated responses)
  • Mobile app for techs working in the field

If your MSP is RMM-heavy, all-tech, and your PSA needs are basic ticketing plus simple invoicing, Atera is genuinely cheaper and simpler. We're not the right answer for that shape.

What migration looks like

Atera supports CSV export of contacts, customers, tickets, time entries, and invoices. Our import tooling handles the standard layouts. Expected timeline for a 10–30 staff Atera-to-OriginPSA migration: 3–5 weeks. Onboarding is included — kickoff call, hands-on import, workflow configuration, team training, and a 30-day priority response window.

Plan the parallel RMM strategy at the same time — most MSPs leaving Atera move to NinjaOne for RMM, which OriginPSA has first-party integration with so device data, alerts, and customer mappings flow automatically.

Pricing comparison

Atera publishes per-tech pricing on its website in roughly the $129–$249/tech/month range across its Pro / Growth / Power / Expert tiers (verify current rates at atera.com/pricing), with RMM, PSA, and AI features included.

OriginPSA on Professional is $49/user/month for the PSA, plus your RMM choice. For an MSP with 10 techs and 5 non-tech staff (ops, billing, dispatch), per-user pricing tends to come out lower overall, with substantially more PSA depth.
